Architecture rounds rarely ask for definitions; they describe a situation and ask what you would do. 'Your order service times out calling payment' or 'a customer was charged twice' has no single correct answer, only a pattern, a trade-off and a failure mode you can explain. This guide gives 60 such scenarios in seven sections: boundaries and decomposition, communication, data consistency (sagas, outbox, inbox, CQRS), resilience with Resilience4j, observability, delivery and evolution, and security and incidents. Examples use Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, PostgreSQL and Kubernetes.
60 questions in 7 sections, 46 code examples in a 81-page PDF (2026 edition).

Cover the answer, read only the scenario, and say your decision out loud with its cost. Then compare it with the quick answer, and read the trap and follow-up. Pick one pattern, such as the outbox or the idempotency key, and sketch it on your own project's data model.
Retries multiply across layers: three layers with three attempts each turn one user request into up to 27 calls to the slow service, which then gets slower, causing more timeouts and more retries: a cascading failure with positive feedback. Fix it by retrying at one layer only, adding backoff with jitter, using circuit breakers and retry budgets, shrinking timeouts down the chain, and shedding load early.
