The App Router changed how React apps are built: components run on the server by default, caching is opt-in, middleware is now called proxy, and params and cookies are read asynchronously. This guide covers 75 questions written against the Next.js 16 documentation: file conventions and layouts, the server and client boundary, the Cache Components caching model, Server Actions and forms, rendering strategies, proxy.ts and authentication, Route Handlers, images, fonts and metadata, and self-hosting with Docker.
75 questions in 8 sections, 74 code examples in a 95-page PDF (2026 edition).

Read each quick answer out loud first, then open the explanation and the trap. Build a small App Router project and try the routing, caching and Server Actions snippets yourself, then practise the follow-up questions without notes.
updateTag(tag) expires a tag immediately for read-your-own-writes and works only in Server Actions. revalidateTag(tag, 'max') marks it stale and serves stale content while refreshing (stale-while-revalidate); it works in Server Actions and Route Handlers and needs a second argument. revalidatePath(path) invalidates a route by URL. refresh() only refetches the current route's payload and leaves cached data alone.
